It’s official, the Super Bowl LVIII teams have been confirmed. The matchup will be between the NFC’s San Francisco 49ers versus the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs. The game will take place Sunday, February 11, at 6:30 pm EST at the Las Vegas Stadium.
Now, let’s take a look at our teams, starting with the 49ers. The last time the 49ers went to a Super Bowl was in the 2020 season, where they lost 31-10 against the Chiefs. The team has changed a lot since then, especially in the quarterback position. There have been 6 starting quarterbacks since 2020, including notable players such as Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. The current starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, was picked up by the 49ers in the 2022 draft as the very last pick, giving himself the name “Mr. Irrelevant”. A Mr. Irrelevant making the big game has only happened twice in history, in Super Bowl XXI with Patriots linebacker Marty Moore and in Super Bowl LV with Buccaneers kicker Ryan Succop. The team members that are also important to this team are defensive lineman Nick Bosa, running back Christian McCaffery, and tight end George Kittle.
Taking a look at the Kansas City Chiefs, they are currently a high ranking team among the AFC. In recent years, the Chiefs have been one of the dominant teams in the AFC, making the Super Bowl in four of the last five seasons, and this marking their 6th Super Bowl appearance. In 2020 they beat the 49ers, lost to Tom Brady’s Buccaneers in 2021, then returned in 2023 to beat the Philadelphia Eagles. Their top players include quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and running back Isiah Pacheco.
The predictions as far as who is going to win the Super Bowl is 50-50 among predictors such as ESPN. Although, after talking with different teachers at Cardinal
Newman, such as Mr. Smith, Mr. Guilliams, and Mr. Zamani, they are all cheering for the 49ers.
