With Christmas just a month away, festivities have just begun. Families have started to put up their Christmas trees, and December traditions are back in swing. Yet, that leaves one thing: What songs will be played? This is a question asked by many. Whether it’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey or “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” which has been covered by many artists over the years, some songs played during Christmas time can be seen as overrated or underrated.
To figure out which songs are overrated and underrated, I asked three students who celebrate Christmas for their opinions about Christmas songs. Here are some of the responses I got:
Daylen Jackson, Senior: “You’ll have to let me think. I know for sure ‘All I Want for Christmas’ is overrated. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a good song, but man, it gets so annoying, especially when working retail and listening to it on repeat. It gives me some kind of PTSD; it’s horrible. But underrated is ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’ by Michael Bublé. Now, I know some people hate his music, but man, Bublé be cooking on Christmas, and honestly, not just Christmas; don’t go sleeping on Bublé; he be making bangers.”
Riley Gorman, Sophomore: “Underrated: ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’ I know that a lot of people would say that it’s the most overrated, and I’m aware it gets a lot of praise, but it’s 100% my favorite Christmas song, and I think it deserves even more. Mariah Carey has such a good voice, and the high notes are immaculate.”
Sofia Giddings, Freshman: “Underrated? Hmm… That’s tricky. I’d say ‘Happy Christmas (War is Over)’ by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I feel like not many people know that song. Overrated. Well, I think everyone can agree with ‘All I Want for Christmas’ by Mariah Carey is overrated. Heard too many times, and it’s annoying.”
Based on the responses from the student surveys, it is clear that there are many underrated Christmas songs that deserve more recognition and appreciation. On the other hand, there are also some overrated Christmas songs that may not be as beloved as they once were. However, the magic and joy of Christmas music cannot be denied, and ultimately, each person’s favorite songs are a matter of personal preference and
nostalgia. So whether a song is underrated or overrated, the most important thing is that it brings happiness and holiday spirit to those who listen to it. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year Crusaders!
