After years of anticipation, Superman has finally made his big return to the screens this summer and he might just be the hero the universe needs. Directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel that we all know and love, this film was not just another superhero movie; it was a reminder that hope still matters. For me, it reignited my belief and love for superheroes.
When Corenswet was announced to play Superman back in 2023, there was speculation about whether he would be able to live up to this role. In my opinion, the casting choice was absolutely perfect. Corenswet’s performance was brilliant, effortlessly balancing the shy, awkward Clark Kent with the noble, inspiring Superman who, with every word and act of service, makes you want to challenge yourself to be better.
This reinvention of the Clark Kent that we usually see in movies reminds me of Tom Welling’s performance in Smallville, a show aired in the early 2000s that explores Clark Kent’s life beginning in his high school years. From the beginning, Gunn promised that his vision entailed a way more human and emotionally intelligent version of Superman. True to his word, Corenswet’s embodiment of the character is unlike Henry Cavill or Zack Snyder. While those movies have a darker and somber tone to them, there was a deliberate shift in the production of this new film that brought audiences hope. Although Superman is an alien, he feels more human here, more in touch with his feelings than those around him. He is willing to bend the rules even if it’s to save just one single life. Above all, his morality and humanity is what shines through.
We see this human side when he is interacting with Lois Lane, the romantic interest played by Rachel Brosnahan, and Lex Luthor, the antagonist played by Nicholas Hoult. Brosnahan’s portrayal of Lois is equally as perfect as Corenswet’s is of Superman. Her wit, sharpness and strength was able to show while also showing her vulnerability with those she loves. Their chemistry is actually magnetic and entrancing. Additionally, Hoult’s depiction of Luthor is one of the most compelling ones I have witnessed.
Genuinely, I cannot stop thinking about this film. The moment I left the theater, I bought another ticket to return that same week. It left me wanting to be a better person, to make a change, to pursue good; it gave me hope. This movie changed the course of my life in the sense that there was something so profoundly moving in the storytelling. It reminded me of why we need these superhero stories and I specifically loved this one because in its essence, it is not trying to preach perfection. The message is not “be flawless.” Instead, it tells us to never lose hope; when you make mistakes, learn from them, grow, and move forward with courage and compassion. This movie was not just another movie; it was a reminder that even in our failures and successes, especially in such an imperfect world, there is always strength, and in hope, there is the greatest power.
