Inter Miami’s 2024 season ended with many notable milestones and good hopes for the future.
In their fifth season, Inter Miami was able to finish overall first in the Eastern Conference. The team was able to achieve their first ever Supporters’ Shield, the award given to the team with the best MLS season record in terms of points. They set a new MLS single-season points record with 74 points, surpassing the previous record of 73 points. The team ended with a record of 22 wins, 4 losses, and 8 draws. Despite their success in the MLS, Inter Miami was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Atlanta United. LA Galaxy went on to win the tournament after defeating the New York Red Bulls 2-1.
Key players this year included Lionel Messi, Leo Campaña and Luis Suarez. Messi, in his first full season with Inter Miami, scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists in 19 matches, earning him the 2024 Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award. He created a total of 38 goal contributions. Suárez also scored 20 league goals and scored 25 goals across all competitions, finishing with a total of 31 goal contributions. Campaña finished the season with 8 goals and 3 assists, and played his 100th game with the club before being traded to New England Revolution for the coming MLS season.
Honorable mentions include Jordi Alba, left back, who created a total of 20 goal contributions, Drake Callender, goalkeeper, and Julian Gressel, midfielder.
Remarkably, the team made it to the quarterfinals in their debut appearance in the CONCACAF Champions Club, where they lost to Monterrey with an aggregate of 5-2.
A key achievement includes the club’s qualifying into the Club World Cup in which they will face some of the best teams around the globe in the summer of 2025.
Next year, the club will be under new coaching. Gerardo “Tata” Martino bid his farewell to the club after his second season. The team will be coached by Javier Mascherano, the former Argentine international player and World Cup veteran. Under his guidance, Inter Miami is expected to adapt a more balanced style of play. His partnership with former teammate Lionel Messi will be instrumental in fostering trust and performing at the club’s full potential.
