Homecoming, a tradition which dates back a century, is a pretty big deal for high schools here in the United States. Homecoming week includes dress up days and school activities, a big football game to wrap up the week, and a school dance. It’s always regarded by students as a special time filled with fun! Here at Cardinal Newman, we had a different themed dress-down day every day leading up to our 2024 disco-dance on Saturday, October 19th.
Starting on the Friday before homecoming week (since school was off
Monday!), everyone dressed in their coziest pajamas, already settling down for the long weekend. Tuesday was generations day, with freshmen dressing up as babies (plenty rocking a onesie), sophomores as teenagers, juniors as adults, and seniors as the elderly. Wednesday, multiplicity day, was when everyone tried to match with as many friends as possible, with groups dressing as minions, in suits, and a very large freshmen group matching in blue! Thursday, PSAT day, although not as exciting as the rest, the student body rocked their college t-shirts. Finally, Friday, each class dressed up in their respective colors: freshmen wore purple, sophomores wore green, juniors wore blue, and seniors were decked out in pink.
Besides the dress up days, Newman held a couple events to
boost the school spirit, including the annual Powderpuff Game and a pep rally. On Wednesday, each class formulated a team of girls who went head-to-head in three flag football games. Freshmen and juniors went against each other, then sophomores and seniors, and at last the final game was between the juniors and seniors. The juniors won, continuing their winning streak from the year before. Meanwhile, at the football game on Friday, Newman came out on top (like always) with a great score of 43-10!
Alas, the disco-themed homecoming dance was certainly a
success! With a bright and fun dance floor, a hugeeeee disco ball, a 360 photo booth, a regular photo booth, and a fabulous array of snacks including disco-ball-cakepops, everyone attending most definitely had a great time.
