A semester at sea, perhaps a year abroad, a roommate that is a stranger and new student IDs. Preparing to go from diplomas to degrees is a pivotal time in a high school senior’s career. Once some of us get our acceptance letters, it will be game over for our alarm clocks. But how does one choose the right college for the next chapter of life? Or make the decision that can shape the rest of their lives?
For some, what makes college have the “it factor” is the amazing extracurricular activities unique to each one. From the wide variety of clubs offered, anything that a student has an interest in can be found easily. Most colleges have an abundance of clubs stemming from types of movies, cultural backgrounds, music, dance, major-related ones, or anything that may spark a group of strangers to bond over a common interest or goal. This is extremely important, as it allows students to not only meet others who have things in common with them but also helps to grow the college community.
The athletes looking to compete at the college level can find the fast-paced and highly competitive action they are seeking through college sports. Whether it’s the football player whose goal is to play in the NFL or the student who has been playing baseball since they could walk, college sports open the door for them to perform and showcase what they have worked so hard to achieve. Even if a person is not quite at that level, intramural and club sports are another great way for those athletes just looking to go out and have a good time competing with fellow athletes. Maybe the student is more of a spectator, in which case the college sports games are an amazing place to experience the thrill of rooting for their college. Nothing beats the feeling of sitting on the edge of the seat along with everyone else in the student section, waiting to see if
that final goal or pass is completed. No matter what type of student you are, college sports are often an awesome part of any college experience.
Many students eagerly anticipate the chance to study abroad, as it offers not just an adventure, but a cultural experience. With many colleges, like FSU, encouraging international travel as part of their admissions process, students are presented with a unique opportunity. A compelling reason to participate in a study abroad program is the potential to master a new language. For instance, a non-native Spanish speaker significantly enhances their language skills by living in Spain. Daily interactions would provide an authentic practice, which would lead to greater fluency. Beyond learning a new language studying abroad helps enhance career prospects as graduates appear more attractive to employers for they are more worldly. Ultimately, studying abroad not only enriches academics but shapes individuals into more culturally aware citizens.
Be sure to note your preferences while touring campuses; this will help you make an educated decision. Whether you become a Florida State Seminole, an Auburn War Eagle, a UF Gator, or a USF Bull, trust that any choice you make will be the right one for you.
