As February nears its end, Girls Varsity Soccer is officially over. This season was one of our best seasons, nearly comparable to our record breaking season last year, where we made it to the district final versus Benjamin.
With the loss of some players going into this season, we also gained many. After losing our goalie last year, we thankfully found a goalie with just as much love, if not more for the sport, in Junior Jaiden Wandtke. A few more honorable mentions of players we gained are Elianna Almazan (Freshman), Sammy Borland (Sophomore), Kendall Barone (Freshman), Ellie Stender (Freshman), Isa Virvong (Freshman), Ella Pinsky (Senior), and Maria Cadena (Senior).
This year we had an upsetting loss against the Benjamin Bucs in the district semi-finals, stopping us from going to the final. We all thought that the semi-finals would be our last game of such an amazing season, and we were already planning our last practice. With the thought of our season being over, the girls were upset, but in a surprising turn of events, we somehow managed to make it to regionals!
We got a wildcard spot which allowed us to go against the Edgewood Red Wolves. We were going into this game just praying we could maybe make it to shootouts, as Edgewood had an already outstanding record. Though we knew our chances of winning were not high, we were happy that our season had a chance to keep going. We sadly lost to Edgewood, bringing about the end to our season, but the three hour bus ride home was probably the best part of that day.
A few days ago we had our Banquet to end the season and honor players who had
remarkable performances. Marsia Spilsted and Ella Pinsky, both volleyball players, earned the MIP (Most Improved Player) award. The next award given out was the Alumni award, which went to senior Dani Birmelin. The Alumni Award is given to the player who showed leadership throughout the season, so it was befitting that it went to our captain Dani, who had all the best traits to make her a great leader. The Crusader award went to Lola Cannova and Sophia Webber, who are both the perfect example of a hard working player who can lead as well as play. Finally, the MVP award went to two players who helped us get as far as we did this season, Jada Alexander and Jaiden Wandtke.
I asked my team if they wanted to leave some thoughts or things they wanted to say now that the season is over and this is what I got…
MARISA SPILSTED- “Playing on this team made me rekindle my love for soccer and the girls on the team are some of my closest friends, they each inspire me everyday.”
ELLA PINSKY- “Nothing is promised in life besides soccer.”
ANNA LEAVITT- “Is practice canceled yet?”
JADA ALEXANDER- “This is more than just a team, it is my family”
COACH BRETT- “And the rest was history”
SOPHIA WEBBER- “I low-key think Brett is more inspirational”
