Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated all throughout the world. It falls on
February 14th and is associated with love. American traditions for Valentine’s Day include giving/receiving candy hearts, flowers, or a box of chocolates. How do other cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day?
In Argentina, they celebrate a “week of sweetness” in July representing Valentine’s Day. During this week of sweetness, lovers exchange kisses and give/receive candies and chocolates to each other. In the Philippines, there is an event which the government hosts where many couples get married at a special gala event. In South Korea, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of each month. Every 14th of each month has a special meaning to it. For example, one day can be “the day of kisses” or “the day of hugs.” In Ghana, February 14th is celebrated as “National Chocolate Day.” On this day you can attend performances, music events, and restaurants that have a special theme for the day. In Bulgaria, February 14th is celebrated as the “day of winemakers.” On this day, couples celebrate by cracking open a bottle of their favorite local wine.
In conclusion, other cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day in a number of ways. Many cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day vastly differently than how us Americans do.
We saw how some celebrate it through different traditions whereas some celebrate it in a whole different month.
