Last week, Cardinal Newman’s religion classes collected Boxes of Joy to help children in need. The Box of Joy
is the perfect way to help children in need feel the joy of Christmas, just as we do every year. These boxes are
given to children living in poverty, most lacking the necessities of life such as access to clean water.
Participants are encouraged to bring in hygiene products, small toys, and other necessities developing countries
might not have. This could include things like a toothbrush, a small ball, or even a small doll or figurine. The
boxes give the kids the same feeling we have every Christmas and almost every other day of the year. The
Boxes of Joy quite literally bring joy to the families’ Christmas season. Cross Catholic Outreach started the
Boy of Joy Program to bridge the divide between our society and theirs by helping you respond to the needs of
these children in developing countries with Catholic ministries around the world. Last year, 61,422 children in
seven countries received Boxes of Joy, including Guatemala, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, El
Salvador, Grenada, and Honduras. The Box of Joy allows us to demonstrate the compassion Christ had and
teaches Cardinal Newman students the importance of generosity and thankfulness.
