Wrestling Wrap-Up
The Cardinal Newman Varsity Wrestling Team finished up a solid and remarkable 2019-2020 season.
They won challenging matches at Cardinal Newman, Jupiter, Dwyer, and Suncoast. The team excelled this year, with students Mir Golabi, Zach Mattox, Josue Martinez, and Nicholas Mee, placing at districts.
Wrestling is an incredibly difficult sport, requiring both physical and mental strength. The team practiced every day after school from 3:00-5:30, with a two mile warm-up, an hour of weight lifting, and 30 minutes of live wrestling.
Junior and captain, Mir Golabi, one of the top wrestlers, finished up his season by making it through Districts, and advancing to Regionals. Mir placed fourth individually at the Raich Tournament on February 14, 2020.
“It was a lot of fun and physically exhausting,” said Golabi.
Junior William Moore, another top wrestler, finished his first season not only enjoying his successes but embracing his failures as well.
Moore said, “For me it taught me what it was like to lose and be solely responsible for my failure and how to deal with that. It showed me that hard work and practice makes you successful and to embrace the pain.”
Freshman Josue Martinez believes wrestling taught him that “to get better it takes time and practice.”
The wrestling team has dedicated their time, focus, and energy into this past season and it is reflected in their incredible accomplishments. They persevered and made it a successful season, filled with empowerment and motivation, ready to come back even stronger next year.
“This season taught me a lot about myself and what I am capable of. Next year, we are going to come back even stronger and more improved,” said freshman Michael Desnoyers.
