Cardinal Newman Holds Memorial Service for Stoneman Douglas Victims
The tragedy that took place at Stoneman Douglas High School seemed to have a profound effect on the Student body of Cardinal Newman High School. Students took action after the “infamous” shooting and formed the Stoneman Douglas Memorial Committee. This effort was spearheaded by Sophomore Student Madeline Viton.
The committee planned a memorial service at Cardinal Newman High School which honored the lives of the Stoneman Douglas students and faculty. The Student Government Association sponsored the service.
The memorial service at Cardinal Newman reminded the students and faculty of the events that occurred on Valentine’s Day and gave them a chance to honor the 17 lost individuals.
The memorial service took place in the gym on March 14 at 10:00 a.m. “Students remained extremely respectful and reverent throughout the entire service,” said Christopher Mee.
In addition to the memorial service, students at Cardinal Newman High School hung signs throughout the school which read, “See Something Say Something.” These signs are meant to remind all students and faculty to report any suspicious activity they may encounter. After the Parkland shooting, many students described the killer, Nikolas Cruz, as a troubled kid who had few friends. They said that he was accustomed to violence and was not afraid to show off his firearms.
Other schools in Palm Beach County such as Seminole Ridge High School and Boca High held walkouts and other demonstrations.
